TEXAS ONE CALL Login Register Monday, October 15, 2007 MANDATORY POSITIVE RESPONSE FOR PIPELINES 9/1/2007 WHAT IS TEXAS ONE CALL SYSTEM? Texas One Call System is a computerized notification center. It establishes a communication link between those who dig underground (excavators) and those who operate underground facilities (operators). Texas One Call System is funded by members who are operators engaged in: Communications Gas Distribution Gas Transmission & Gathering Electric Power Products/Pipelines Water & Wastewater* *Water & Wastewater are “Class B” facilities per the Texas Utilities Code and are NOT required to register with a one call notification center. Texas One Call will determine the location of the work from the excavator. Texas One Call will notify all members with underground facilities in the area where the excavation will take place. Notification will also be sent to all registered notification centers in Texas. All operator members of Texas registered notification centers will mark their facilities in the area of the excavation. ONLY ONE CALL IS NECESSARY. A change in the law effective 11/1/2001 requires the contacted operator of an underground facility to notify the excavator of intent not to mark. All messages to and from Texas One Call are recorded for the protection of both the excavator and the operators. The Texas One Call TOLL FREE phone number provides the means to contact ALL registered underground facility owners for the ENTIRE state of Texas! WHO BENEFITS? Everyone! Operators, excavators and the general public benefit from the elimination of dig-ins, damages and the outages. It reduces chance of injury. It also prevents damage to public and private property and the loss or interruption of services vital to public safety. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Texas One Call Service is FREE to excavators. The notification center is funded by members of Texas One Call. Cost of membership is offset by the reduction in cost of repairs due to dig-ins. HOW TO USE Texas One Call System Excavator dials Texas One Call TOLL FREE: 1-800-245-4545. An operator at the center records the required information listed on the back of this brochure, tells the caller names of companies and notification centers that will be notified, and gives the caller a location request number. The location request message is transmitted by computer link to the owners of the underground facilities and to all other registered notification centers in Texas. The underground facility owner or operator marks the location of facilities at the excavation site. APWA STANDARD Color code for temporary marking of underground facilities: RED = Electric powerlines, cables, conduit, and lighting cables YELLOW = Gas, oil, steam, petroleum, or gaseous material ORANGE = Communication, alarm, or signal lines, cables, or conduit BLUE = Potable water GREEN = Sewer and drain lines PURPLE = Reclaimed water, irrigation, and slurry PINK = Temporary survey markings WHITE = Proposed excavation
